July 2018 Portfolio Summary

This post will summarize what happened to my portfolio in July of 2018. I will use data as of 8/17/2018 in this post (I am usually late to post the previous month's report). First we will summarize what happened in the general markets.

This blog summarizes my multi-decade long project of dividend investing. My purpose is to build passive dividend income that can grow by itself annually. The most important objective is the safety of the dividend, the self-sustaining ability of the companies to increase their dividends, and the overall growth of my passive income in the future to support myself. All results and dollar results shown here are that of my own and funded with my own hard earned cash.

The S&P500 index did very well in July. As a result my portfolio saw a decent increase in value. The rise has large support from the Consumer Staples sector. I have 31% of my portfolio in consumer staples so this boost really helped the portfolio value growth.

With a combination of market growth and increasing investment from my biweekly salary contributions, my portfolio has crossed the $500,000 threshold with high velocity.

The 30 year treasury is seeing a decline in its percentage rate. This bodes well for dividend paying stocks. The dollar has continued to increased in strength. And crude oil is finally pulling back from its high levels.

The chart below shows the current value of my assets less liabilities. The value passed $500,000 in July. Right now in August 19 it is sitting at $505,240. The growth in my portfolio in the beginning phases was largely from my periodic contributions. Right now, portfolio growth upwards are influenced by market growth. Of course, my periodic contributions will help buffer any declines in the market. I will always continue to invest periodically into my asset pool to increase my dividend income.

This is the breakdown of my current portfolio holdings. The big players in my portfolio are Altria (tobacco), Johnson & Johnson (medical conglomerate), Visa (credit card), Philip Morris (tobacco), and Home Depot (home improvement). I have 19 positions that are now in the 5 figure sizes. Consumer staples continue to be my largest sector at 31%. But I have expanded other sectors now. Healthcare, Financials, Utilities, Discretionary, and Industrial now have decent sizes too.

The annual dividends my portfolio will generate is now at $13,227. The growth continues upward as I periodically add more shares of dividend paying stock. The growth is a combination of the companies increasing their dividends on their own plus my periodic addition of more stock.

Stay tuned for next month's report
Happy Investing
